Description
Vanillin begins with an impression of sweet, creamy, vanilla-like, and balsamic. As the material settles, soft sugar, warm wood, and a familiar confectionery trace becomes more apparent, giving the profile more depth than its first impact suggests.
Perfumers can draw on it in vanilla accords, gourmands, ambers, chocolates, soaps, candles, and warm bases to supply a specific accent, strengthen the central accord, or connect neighbouring materials. With Vanillin, the vanilla & warmth effect is most useful when it strengthens the intended accord rather than drawing attention to the raw material itself.
Evaluate it in the finished base, where any tendency towards cloying, dusty, or overly familiar is easier to judge. A blotter establishes direction, but the finished base shows whether Vanillin is supporting the formula or beginning to obscure it.

Uses: In this form it is one of the most widely used of all perfumery materials, used in all types of fragrance in small doses. Vanillin comes as white to cream coloured crystals, that dissolve readily at low doses in most perfumery materials and in ethanol. High doses can become sickly-sweet and amounts above 8% of the perfume concentrate are rarely used. It has some useful fixative qualities as well, particularly with floral materials.
